How to join

This section will provide you with the initial information to help you decide if you want to apply to join Freemasonry, and how to contact us to ask any further questions, or make an application to join. It will also briefly explain the process of joining, and how to start your application. It may seem a daunting step to take, but it really is as simple as set out for you within these pages.

Who can join Freemasonry

Freemasonry is a multi racial and multi cultural organisation. Membership is open to men who are law abiding, of good character, with no criminal record, and who acknowledge a belief in a Supreme Being.

If you can answer yes to the following four questions, then you are eligible to apply to join:

  1. You are a man
  2. You believe in a supreme being (of any description)
  3. You are over 18 years old
  4. You do not have a criminal record.

It is also important to note that it is expressly forbidden to use your membership as a Freemason for personal gain, and would result in expulsion.

How to Apply

If you are interested in joining, then in the first instance contact the Lodge Secretary, who will explain the process.  At this stage a preliminary meeting may be arranged for you to meet with one or two members of the Lodge, as an informal session for you to ask questions, so that you can be sure that you wish to proceed with an application, and for us to ensure that you have a clear understanding about Freemasonry.

Can you tell your family and friends?  – Yes of course! This isn’t MI6, in fact we expect you to tell them.

It is very important that your wife or partner should be fully supportive of you joining Freemasonry, as the family must always take precedence. Family comes first, then work, then Freemasonry. Your family must be happy for you to give up some spare time to become a mason.

It is also absolutely fine if you want to tell your friends, we want you to be proud of being a Freemason and perhaps even open the opportunity for them to join, should they express an interest. If you don’t show them the door, they won’t know it is there.

What happens next?

The next stage will be for you to submit a formal application form and provide references.

If all is in order, a formal interview will be arranged, with a panel of Lodge members, who will need to satisfy themselves that you are eligible and have sound reasons for wanting to become a Freemason, and that you understand the requirements and commitment of membership.

The Lodge members will also need to be reassured that you have discussed your possible membership with your family, and that they are supportive. By the same token this is your opportunity to interview the Lodge members and to satisfy yourself that Freemasonry is for you. If we are all content to proceed, your application will be proposed to all the Lodge members, and you will be invited to a meeting to be Initiated, which should prove a very enjoyable experience for you.
